June 29th - Dublin

We stayed at the Brooks Hotel in Dublin. It was two blocks away from Grafton Street, one of Dublin's market districts. Lots of shops, cafes, and restaurants line the street. I guess it was an alright city, as cities goes.

I read horror stories about driving in Dublin. Tour guide books exclaim "Don't drive in Dublin! It is difficult to get around in, crowded and to be happy you should not be behind the wheel of a car." In keeping with this new intelligence, I proclaimed to my Mom: "I will drive you anywhere, but I will not drive in Dublin." So with this conviction in my mind and my heart in my throat, I both drove (and got lost) in Dublin. A word to wise: Don't drive in Dublin.

We lodged at the Brooks hotel which is a lovely large hotel whose rooms are decorated with a modern flair. Clean crisp lines, black and white, somewhat geometric. The overall look was almost businesslike but extremely soothing. I would stay at this hotel again if I never had to eat there. Don't break any fast there. The phrase "two eggs, sunny side up" translated into Irish is "Give me a couple eggs, overcooked to harndess, capable of being launched at an unruly guest." They also do not know how to make an American pancake. Don't even ask. Suffice it to say that upon return home I seriously considered sending the chef some "Shake and Pour" Hungry Jack mix.

The brighter side of this day was perusing the shops. There are many things available in the UK that I like much better. We saw wonderful linens. The styles in this citty were more current and appealing to the younger set. I believe it is in Dublin that we purchased a denim skirt for Kris in which she looks positively sweet.
