Bunratty Castle...

...is in Shannon, Co. Clare. We ate dinner on the 20th at the castle's medieval banquet. As we entered the castle we were given bread to dip in salt as token of safety and good luck. Mead was served before dinner, then we all moved upstairs to the actual four-removes (courses) dinner.

  1. Thick potato(?) and leek soup that we ate with a dark bread.
  2. Spare ribs, good and messy, though not barbecued.
  3. Capons (chicken) with carrots and turnips. I don't think I've had turnips before; they're not too bad.
  4. A white whine-soaked sponge cake with a cream in the middle and berries.

The dinner was good, knives only as we were expected to eat like the castle inhabitants did. There were pitchers of water, white wine (decent) and red wine (tasted like vinegary piss). Mead was served before dinner, a dry mead, though sweet. The castle itself is rather small, but still imposing, especially up close.
