Aberdeen, City of Boredom Granite |

The train ride from Stirling to Aberdeen was about 2 hours long. Aberdeen, City of Granite, is on the north east coast of the island, and is a major center of off-shore oil development. We checked into the Brentwood Hotel on Crown Street and walked about the city. Ate lunch at a Tandoori place called Nazma (very good lamb tikka).
The Marischal College is the world's second largest granite structure. It is also the world's second largest granite structure with gantries, cranes, and scaffolding all over it during its renovations. The other local colleges were holding a parade, so we watched for a short while before walking past pub after pub after pub.
After pub. The Scots love their pubs. And drinking outside is perfectly acceptable, so you see people of all ages wandering around with pint glasses. |

Today, I had tea rather than coffee because they always serve the tea in these cute tiny teapots. And I had lemon marmalade on my toast. Fiona told me what the black sausage thing was that I had in Glasgow - turns out to be blood pudding. Gross!
We walked to the train station and went to Aberdeen.
For future reference, don't go to Aberdeen except to eat at a couple of the restaurants.
We got to our hotel where I discovered that half of the beds we'd slept in during the trip had pink sheets. I think our hotel caters to business people; it was a tiny room.
We had lunch at a tandoori Indian place, Nazma, where we were completely underdressed but the food was fantastic. We had 2 papadams and a tray of chutneys and pickles. I had zeera bolti lamb in a sauce with fennel and coriander.
Then we wandered around a bit and decided there wasn't really much to see in Aberdeen.
Dinner was great though! Went to La Tasca, a Spanish tapas restaurant. John made me order because he didn't want to mispronounce all the Spanish words. We had a bunch of little appetizers while waiting for our paella to cook (it took an hour so there was plenty of time for the appetizers). My favorite tapa was wilted spinach with pine nuts, raisins, and apples. I had sangria and John had a beer and another Irn Bru. |
