Tonight was our fancy dinner night and so we went shopping because Jen needed a throw or a coat to wear over her fancy black dress so she could stay warm. She picked a long black wrap that she could wear in a variety of fashions. We came back to the hotel and then got ready for dinner and the ballet.
Dinner was a 6PM reservation at Abstract, across the river. I didn't want to drive because parking sucks most everywhere, so we walked. It rained. I gave Jen the umbrella I borrowed from the hotel. She walked. I got wet. She wore heels, I got wetter. We arrived at the restaurant. It was good.
But "good" doesn't really describe the meal we had. The ballet was at 7:30 so we explained to the waitstaff we didn't have all day. But they delivered everything quickly and it was all perfect. There were numerous appetizer courses, and my main course was lamb with beetroots and vegetables. The presentation of everything was phenomenal. I didn't take any pictures because I figured this would have been out-of-place. The dessert was also tasty - I had a creme brulee, and Jen had flan with pop rocks!
The after-dinner coffee was a course of its own: there were squares of tiny desserts to go with it, with a chocolate fondue sauce and mango sauce. Terrific!
The ballet was a double feature: “Carmen” and “Cheating, Lying, and Stealing.” Carmen was a new ballet made especially for the Scottish Ballet Company. It was good, very traditional. The second ballet featured (bad) electronic music, and was often confusing because the two main couples would be on opposite sides of the stage - you never knew what to focus on. The interview (printed in the ballet's programme) with the creator reeked of pretention. Definitely too self-absorbed to realize that just because your life is really confused, and you want to be true to life, that confusion translates well into something people can actually watch. Carmen was excellent, but the annoying beeps and boops and attitudes of Cheating, Lying & Stealing could be skipped. All in all, though, a really great night. |

Today was super-great. We went downtown for some shopping and I finally got my Maclean scarf and a big black wrap to wear with my banging black dress later at dinner and the ballet.
We lunched at a Pizza Express where I had salad and John had a spicy pizza, then headed to a launderette where we paid $6.50 to wash 2 loads of laundry and a pound per 10 minutes to dry! But I was verra excited to have clean clothes again.
Then we started getting ready for the evening. Hair, makeup, jewelry, dress, shoes, wrap. I ironed John's shirt and he put on his suit and tie.
Then it was raining.
We walked to Abstract because John really didn't want to move the car out of its very convenient parking place, and it was miserifying in heels. It was rainy, cold, windy, and we had to walk across a bridge with little planks in it. My shoe fell off.
But when we finally got to the restaurant, dinner was amazing and fabulous! I had roasted artichokes with a fried egg for an appetizer, and somehow they'd soft-boiled the egg and coated it with panko but it wasn't greasy at all. I think they torched it with a blowtorch.
The main for me was halibut with baby potatoes and langostines. I loved how every time they brought out a course, the lady would tell us what everything was. Then for dessert I had chocolate. Chocolate with toffee flakes, a little flan with pop rocks (!), banana puree, and peanut butter mousse.
And the lady asked if we'd like to have coffee. And John kinda was worried that we wouldn't make it to the ballet on time since it took me twice as long as I thought to walk in those shoes, but I said we've got to have coffee. And it was the best part. The coffee had that little froth on top, and she brought out a tray of one-piece desserts to eat with chocolate sauce and mango puree. There were candied almonds, peanut brittle, coconut jelly, honey tablets, and a marshmallow. Soooooo great!
Then we headed over to the ballet. We saw a double feature; Carmen was my favorite for the story line and the grace. Cheating, Lying, and Stealing had this techno/anti-rhythmic music that was too dissonant and disconnected for my taste. But still, the whole evening was super. |
