Like Picking a Scab on Your Knee and Eating it

Today we drove all over the Isle of Skye. The scenery was breathtaking, and nothing like what I'm used to when I think of the ocean. We East Coasters are lucky to have miles of sandy sunny beaches. The Skye Islanders make do with kilometers of cliffs and boulders. Their coasts are much more picturesque, but I wouldn't want to try surfing on their rocky shores.

We drove to the southern end of the island, and we saw seals after hiking a really neat trail covered in wool (I think it was meant to keep the path dry - otherwise the foot traffic would erode everything away in the damp). On a lark I found the dinkiest little ocean road and we followed it until it ended, in the middle of nowhere along a cliffside. Driving is a slow affair for the most part- no wonder they build their roads where there's scenery.

For dinner we went back to Portree, the only sizeable town on the island. There was a restaurant at the harbor called The Lower Deck, and I was enjoying the black pudding appetizer until, well, just read Jen's entry. Gross. And the sole tasted exactly like a dirty diaper. Imagine an infant that just soiled itself, and you can kind of smell it coming from the other room, and you know what's happened, and it just smells bad. This is what I was served for dinner. Certainly put me off sole for a long, long time.
Today we headed south on the island to Armadale and Sleat near the ferry dock. We found a forest walk to an otter hide and seal lookout spot and as we followed it we passed herb gardens on both sides. They'd planted purple sage, thyme, oregano, St. John's wort, and tons of different things. We walked on a squishy path made of wool and when we got to the end, we saw seals sunning themselves on the rocks. But no otters.

Headed back to the ferry dock and grabbed some lunch at a tiny trailer called the Pasta Shed. Really good food; I had carrot and coriander goujons, fries, an herb-a-licious salad, red pepper and tomato-sauced pasta, and coleslaw. And an apple cinnamon tea. Their desserts were top shelf. I'm going to figure out how to make Victorian sponge cake now that I'm home. John liked the Snickers cake. I wish we'd bought some desserts for the road.

I did gross John out at dinner. We went to a place called the Lower Deck and he wanted to get black pudding, which I really didn't want to eat because it's basically a blood sausage. I tried a bite for him but couldn't eat any more. Then I told him it was basically like eating a big scab, being that it's crispy and made of blood and all. I think I ruined it for him. Then his main course, sole with prawns and lemon butter sauce, smelled like a diaper. But the fries were good. =)
