Edinburgh: Capitol of the Realm

We awoke today to a wonderful Elderfield House breakfast: fresh grapefruit, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes, raisin pancakes with cinnamon toast, and a host of jams (hurray marmalade!). After this fortifying breakfast we marched back to bed. Several hours of respite later, Jen felt well enough to head out into town.

Holyrood House, the Queen's Edinburgh residence, is about 3/8s of a mile away from our B&B. The pictures would speak for themselves, but since we're not allowed any indoor photography, I'll have to try. The rooms were all large, but there's a feeling of wear in every one. There were tapestries (though Holyrood isn't considered a castle) all faded with age. The royal apartments are on the third floor and are not open to visitors. We saw Mary Queen of Scots' living areas, and the place where her Italian secretary was stabbed an astounding 56 times! Huzzah!

For dinner we ate at the Tass pub - a short walk up the Royal Mile, and Jen had Cullen Skink (fish stew) and vegetarian haggis with neeps (turnips) and tatties (PO-TA-TOES). The haddock had "streaky bacon" in it.

Oh, and fudge! I'm sitting in our nice big, well-used bed at the B & B drinking tea with my WIFE and eating one of the six varieties of fudge we bought at the local FAUGHIEDGREE (that's Gaelic for fudgery - look it up). There are three yellow ones, a green one, and two brown 'uns. They are all delicious, although the yellow one featuring whiskey is, as Jen so eloquently stated, gross.

After dinner we stopped at Carson Clark Antique Map Gallery on Canongate. We talked with the proprietor at length about how dumb Americans were for voting for George W *twice* and the benefits of a no-dairy diet. Now we're back at the B & B!
Finally some food I can feel good eating! There was a ton of fresh fruit, tea, coffee, raisin pancakes, toast, and orange juice for breakfast. There was even a soy yogurt. Oh yeah!

I went back to bed again till the early afternoon. Then we went to Holyrood Palace and saw where the Queen goes on holiday. The Abbey ruins were really cool. We did the audio tour and listened to history about every room in the Palace.

We went to a pub for dinner, Tass, and I had vegetarian haggis with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes) only to find out that I'd had it before - it was the hash-like thing I ate for breakfast at the Buchanan Hotel. So that was plenty enough of that. I also decided not to order Cullen Skink anymore.

Then on the way back down we got sucked into this old map store with an owner who had strong opinions about dairy food. He and I could both agree that there's no great reason to eat the stuff, and I found out that Alpro is the soy milk brand around Scotland. Useful information.

Then we ate fudge and I got sick. Blah.

Nice scenery! Isn't vegetarian haggis a contradiction of terms.
