Drive into the Skye |

The Isle of Sky was a fair drive. I felt pretty good about it though - no more bumping into curbs for me! We took the straight route which turned out to be a beautiful scenic motor way. The road took us up into the mountains and back down again before coming to the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. The bridge is supplemented by other ferry services at various points on the Isle of Skye. Skye is the largest of the Hebridean Isles, and the most visited.
We stopped at the B & B, Fernlea, and unloaded our stuff. The landlady, Iris, showed us to our double room, this time without an en suite bath. The bathroom was a private one next door to the bedroom though, so we didn't have to share. |

We left Inverness to drive to Skye Island. It was a beautiful drive with waterfalls and snow-capped mountains and water.
We checked into our B & B and left the luggage before driving up the island. We went to Edinbane Pottery and after that I asked John to please not allow me to stop at anymore potteries because I was spending all the money.
Then we went down another crazy one-lane road that had passing areas every 50 yards for oncoming traffic. We got to the end and I visited Shilasdair Yarns while John walked about taking pictures of sheep. The lady at the yarn store showed me some yarn being dyed. There were huge pots of dye and they use natural substances to get the colors. Purple comes from the heartwood of a South American tree, oranges come from particular roots, reds from cochineals (beetles), and yellows and browns from lichens right outside the building.
Next, we headed to Dunvegan Castle where I enjoyed the gardens more than the castle. There were windy paths and hills and wooden bridges and waterfalls. |
